Helping us give

Although Matt and I are trying to limit the amount of luggage we bring with, I can't help but want to bring something of our Canadian overabundance to people in need in Sierra Leone.

The website Stuff Your Rucksack gives information to travelers about local agencies in need of goods that travelers could bring and donate. There are two charities in Sierra Leone, both focused on education, that are looking for materials including stationary, classroom materials, clothing, shoes, sports equipment and especially computer equipment.

If you would like to donate any of these items and are in the Ottawa or Montreal area, please let me know.

Thanks!

Keeping my resolution

My new years resolution this year was to start a blog.

I had been reading a ton of vegetarian cooking and restaurant blogs and felt inspired to share my own culinary creations and love for food preservation. I had even come up with the clever title "Can-able cuisine". Get it - cause I was going to do a a lot of canning and tell everyone how awesome it is. Well, I set up the blog (you can find it sad and lonely somewhere on blogger), and I even had Matt take some pictures of a soup I made, and a lovely array of appetizers I had prepared for a dinner party, but by January 5th the dream had died. I was just too busy (lazy). It was the blog that never was.

So - when the decision was made just a few short weeks ago that Matt and I were going to shake things up a bit and go to Sierra Leone, I figured this would help me kill two guilt-birds with one stone. I could finally fulfill my new years resolution (and destiny) AND I could keep family, friends, loved ones (and maybe the occasional stranger) apprised of our first impressions, joys, challenges and overall experience of Sierra Leone living.

Take that New Years resolution - I just completed my first post - see you next time for a chat on pre-departure jitters and how to avoid reality by tearing out the carpet.
